Overlord light novel volume 1 is a very interesting story concept, especially if you playing MMORPGs for years! Uniquely, all the plot based on the antagonist perspective who become the protagonist at the same time.
The personalities of the minion characters main character develops and the slow world-building as he explores his surroundings are fantastic.
The volume 1 was released on July 30, 2012 in Japan, and on May 24, 2016 in English version.
This post would only talk about the volume 1 in specific. To read other volumes review, please visit our Overlord light novel complete list.
Without further ado, here are the reasons why Overlord light novel volume 1 is incredibly addictive!
Very Fun and Interesting
It was a very interesting and enjoyable experience.
Nice artwork in the book, it just felt like a novel but with occasional pictures and slightly different chapters.
The text itself was very good for a fantasy novel and suited my tastes and interests.
I’m familiar with this series of anime and the books are definitely even better.
One of the Most Favorite Light Novel Series
I have been reading it since they started being released and have read all of them that have been released to date.
In a nutshell, it’s very deep lost in an MMO series about gamers playing an undead sorceress in an MMO called YGGDRASIL.
A little synopsis, the main character waits alone in the castle he built with his friends, and everything goes dark when the server powers down.
When he awakens, he is actually the undead sorcerer Ainz Ooal Gown, and the monster NPCs in his guild castle known as Nazarek are all alive and ready to serve him, and how his minions interact with the world and its inhabitants, and his eventual decision to rule the world.
You’ll be picky, frown, and applaud at his actions in this super-long rollercoaster series that spans 16 books (14 are localized) at the time of my posting.
I can’t recommend this series enough, and I’ve never found a light novel more addictive.
Awesome Light Novel
The series is a genre trapped in games, but everything is real and permanent because the game world is actually the real world and real life.
Since this is a difficult concept, I felt it necessary to over-emphasize that the “game world” in which the protagonist is trapped is very realistic.
A dark series, but not particularly malicious, and you find yourself rooting for him the entire time.
The first book is a great introduction to the Overlord series.
The first few chapters are a little lackluster, but it recovers quickly and ends with him in one of the most humiliating one-sided fights I’ve ever imagined.
I have read this book several times and never get tired of the story.
This book is the perfect introduction to the otherworldly tale of amazing dark heroes.
Be prepared for all the usual tropes to be turned upside down and the MC to be the big villain in a thrilling and totally unexpectedly wholesome story.
Even though he does his best, you can’t help but adore him.
This can be a little daunting for new readers, but great for veterans who read anime and hunt its merchandise.
However, if you don’t give him a chance, you won’t know if he likes it, so I recommend it to everyone.
After Watching the Anime? It’s Okay! Just Read!
Before reading the light novel, I’ve already watched the anime from season 1 to season 3 many times.
This light novel version fills in many details left out in the anime.
Read the light novel yourself!
Watching the difference between the book and the anime on Blu-ray or DVD feels like a jigsaw puzzle completed with the power of a hammer.
Also, I often see the question on the Internet: what is canon – web novels (online originals) or light novels (books)? Many people answer the question that both are canons. However, to clarify, in my own words, the light novel is a remastered director’s cut version.
If You Like Anime Adaptation, Buying the Novel is Almost a Must
Isekai has been done many times before, so Overlord may not be the most original work, but it’s so well written that it doesn’t matter.
The worldbuilding is slow but consistent, and the detail never leaves you questioning scene changes.
I plan to eventually buy the entire series, but for now I’ll stick with what I have time for.
I can’t wait to see the 4th season of the anime. Do your best, Maruyama!
Support the Author of This Amazing Series by Buying It!
The novel is great, but this is a review of the physical copy.
So, I finally got the chance to support the author and purchase my own physical copy, and also that the current series is his 14th volume and his 16th in Japan this year. I’m looking forward to purchasing his volume 15 when the volumes are due to be released.
I bought the HC version and it comes with lots of art designed by Soubin.
The font is very legible. The translation uses ‘z’ instead of ‘s’ like in the anime to make Ainz’s name look nice from my point of view and spells.
My only problem is that the text throughout the novel has spacing issues. This may be a formatting issue.
An Exhilarating New Masterpiece in the Fantasy Genre
Overlord is not a traditional fantasy, but it is a story written by the author, with many suggestions from online readers.
Add a relaxed reading feeling of darkness and leisure scenes.
Each chapter has wonderful, dark and enchanting illustrations that make you wish there was more.
It builds and communicates clearly to the reader.
This is the type of reading I would suggest to teen-and-up readers who might be interested in fantasy novels.
It’s easy to read, fun, and has an ever-developing storyline and a lot to offer.
The character of is attached. The only flaw in this piece is that I can’t fault it in good faith.
In my estimation, it did a great job.
The editor could have minimized this problem with proper application of commas and punctuation.
Otherwise, I recommend reading this piece.
Fantastic Light Novel Series
Overlord is a great example of extensive world building in a light novel.
There are many points throughout the series where the main character is treated as a “force of nature” rather than a narrative point of view, so some people may be fed up with how much time they can devote to side characters.
I really like this form of storytelling, and even though I’m really into the anime adaptation, it leaves enough detail behind that the light novel series is incredibly fun to read.
